South African women are doing wonderful charitable work and Babalwa Dinginto is one of them. This women’s month we spoke to Babalwa Dinginto (36), a grade 1 teacher at Qhugqwala primary in the Amathole district, Peddie, Eastern Cape.
Growing up in a rural area where your way out of poverty is through education motivated Miss Dinginto. After matric in 2004 Babalwa valued the importance of education in rural areas.
In the wake of Peddie schools closing, some dropping in matric pass rates due to socio-economic factors, Miss Dinginto started the “Help me To help a child” equality campaign working closely with “Ntombam” the local Eastern Cape sanitary pads brand to help fight the dropout rate. She extended her gratitude by donating toiletry gifts at Nathaniel Pamla high school, one of Peddie’s famed public schools that is proving to stay above board annually.
The “Help me To help a child,” campaign was launched earlier this year to provide students from underprivileged backgrounds with toiletry packs. The drive and resilience of such an amazing initiative were sparked when her brother who is in his matric year raised an issue about students who cannot afford toiletries. As Covid-19 suppressed most ways of income in the majority of households, using cloths as pads and sunlight bar soap as a roll-on became a new norm. “When my brother told me about this dire situation, I knew that I had to intervene”, said Babalwa.
She then designed a poster where people started donating the little they had. This campaign took patience to come to fruition reaching fifty-seven learners.
“My aim is to motivate learners not to be bound by their past, to be innovators, and to crack the walls that hold them back from their dreams”, said Babalwa. In addition, she highlighted that “Bonke mabafike entanjeni”- meaning all learners should reach for the final leg.

It is your contribution that makes tomorrow’s innovators!!
