City of Johannesburg Bursary

What the bursary offers

  • Available to students residing in Johannesburg, for undergraduate full-time studies at accredited South African institutions.
  • Supports qualifications of at least one year in duration (not for short courses).
  • Not available for postgraduate studies.
  • Covers tuition, registration fees, prescribed books and study materials.
  • Maximum funding amount is about R40,000 per academic year.
  • Accommodation costs are generally not covered.

Eligibility criteria

  • Must be a South African citizen and a resident in Johannesburg.
  • Must have a strong academic record.
  • Applicants should not already be receiving another bursary or grant.
  • Study programme must be full-time and at least one year long.
  • Renewable annually based on satisfactory academic performance.

How to Apply

  • Visit the official City of Johannesburg website during the application window.
  • Navigate to the “Vacancies / Bursaries” section and select the relevant bursary advert.
  • Complete the online application form in full.
  • Upload all required supporting documents (certified copies), including:
  • South African ID
  • Latest academic record or matric results / current university transcript
  • Proof of residence in Johannesburg (municipal account or affidavit)
  • Proof of household income (payslips, affidavit if unemployed, or death certificate if applicable)
  • Review your application to ensure accuracy before submission.
  • Submit the application online before the deadline (late or incomplete applications are not considered).
