The 2025 National Research Foundation (NRF) Awards ceremony recently honoured South Africa’s top researchers and scientists in a grand celebration of innovation and excellence.
This year’s event was held under the theme Innovating for a Sustainable Future, reflecting the NRF’s Vision 2030 of Research for a Better Society.
Held under the theme “Innovating for a Sustainable Future”, the annual NRF Awards recognise outstanding achievements made by individuals and teams whose excellence has significantly advanced science for the benefit of society.
Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, praised the NRF for its tireless efforts in positioning South Africa as a leader in global research. ‘
He highlighted the country’s excellence in various fields, including astronomy, nuclear physics, and medicine, which have not only advanced scientific knowledge but also contributed significantly to the nation’s development.
The NRF Awards recognise outstanding achievements made by individuals and teams whose excellence has significantly advanced science for the benefit of society.
By rewarding those who make use of research for the advancement and betterment of humanity, the awards encourage a continued culture of innovation and scientific inquiry.
Professor Mosa Moshabela, Chairperson of the NRF Board, emphasized the awards’ role in recognising individual excellence and the collective power of science to transform society.
